The Grand Staircase

The Grand Staircase (or Escalante Staircase) is one of a handful of new national monuments, unique in that it is maintained by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and not the National Park Service. Unfortunately, it isn’t really accessible by automobile. If you want to visit, you really need a truck. I’ve included a few photos I recently took at the Staircase.

This is one of those places I’d like to see developed a bit, on the one hand, so more people can visit; but I also want to see left alone. Unfortunately, we can’t have it both ways, can we? I believe we have an obligation to protect the natural world (from ourselves!) to the extent that is possible. But we can’t really keep it hidden, either. There needs to be a balance. We human beings aren’t very good at balance, and it only takes a few people to ruin it for all of us.
